Getting started
How do I get a link into Larder?
Use the share sheet in whatever app you're in — Instagram, Safari, Messages — and pick Larder. The link is saved immediately and the page is fetched afterwards in the background, so saving never makes you wait.
On a Mac you can also paste a link straight into the search field at the top of the window.
Do I need an account?
No. Larder has no sign-up and no login. Your library syncs through your own iCloud account, so signing in to iCloud on your devices is all that's needed.
Does it work offline?
Yes. Your library is stored on the device, so browsing, searching and cooking all work with no connection. Saving works too — the link is stored right away, and the page is fetched when you're back online.
Recipes
How does Larder read a recipe out of a page?
It tries several methods in order, all on your device: structured recipe data published by the site, then the page's own metadata and caption, then a text parser that recognises ingredient and step patterns.
Sites vary enormously in how they publish recipes, so results vary too. When nothing works, you still keep the link, the image and the original text.
What if it gets the recipe wrong, or misses it?
Everything is editable. Open the item, edit the ingredients and steps directly, and your changes stay. You can also ask Larder to refresh the metadata if the page has since changed.
What is the AI option, and do I need it?
You don't need it — the on-device methods handle most pages. If you add your own Claude API key in Settings, Larder gains a last-resort fallback: when the on-device methods find no recipe, it sends the saved page's description to Anthropic to try to extract one.
Two things worth knowing. It runs automatically once a key is saved, not on a button press each time. And it uses your API key, so the usage is billed to your own Anthropic account. Remove the key to switch it off entirely. The privacy policy covers exactly what is sent.
Can I scale a recipe?
Yes — quantities scale with the serving count, and you can switch between metric and imperial units. Cook Mode then shows one step at a time so you're not hunting for your place with wet hands.
Organising
What's the difference between a folder and a smart folder?
A folder is somewhere you put things — an item lives in one folder. A smart folder is a saved search: it collects everything matching its criteria, and an item can appear in as many as it matches.
Smart folder criteria are comma-separated and match any of what you list, so #ai, #claude, #anthropic collects items carrying any one of those tags. A word without a # searches titles, notes and ingredients instead.
I have the same recipe saved twice. Can Larder tidy that up?
Yes. A Duplicates section appears in the sidebar whenever there's something to review. It separates exact duplicates — same link, or the same recipe content saved from two different places — from possible ones that merely share a title.
Merging keeps one copy and folds everything from the others into it: tags, notes, folder, images and the original addresses, which remain listed on the item you keep. You choose which copy survives.
What does the pantry do?
Tell Larder what you have in, and it ranks your recipes by how few ingredients you're missing — so "what can I actually cook tonight" becomes a list rather than a memory game.
Your data
Where is my library stored?
On your device, and mirrored to the private database of your own iCloud account so it syncs between your devices. There is no Larder server and the developer has no access to it. See the privacy policy.
Can I get my data out?
Yes — export from Settings. It's your library; it shouldn't be trapped.
Something isn't syncing between my devices.
Check that both devices are signed in to the same iCloud account and that iCloud Drive is enabled for Larder. Sync is handled by iCloud and can take a moment to settle, particularly after a large import. If it's still stuck, get in touch via the support page.
